Culture and events in Gran Canaria: what to do in September and October

Discover the best cultural events in Gran Canaria in September and October: Fiestas del Pino, Feria Arucas y el Mar, jazz festivals, and much more. Plans for families, couples, and adventurers.

Gran Canaria in autumn: when the island bursts with culture

September and October are two of the best months to discover Gran Canaria. The summer heat softens, the sea still invites you for a swim, and the island comes alive with music, pilgrimages, and festivals. It is the time when local culture spills out onto the streets, and here at Avvican we want you to experience it just like a local.

If you are visiting during these dates, don't just stay on the beach. Here is what you simply cannot miss.

September: the month when the island takes to the streets

Fiestas del Pino (Teror) — until September 27

If you can only visit one place, make it Teror. The Basílica del Pino becomes the island's spiritual and festive hub, and on September 8th (the big day), the whole of Gran Canaria seems to make a pilgrimage there. There is a traditional pilgrimage (romería), music, fireworks, and that small-town atmosphere that forms a core part of our identity. This year's lineup includes names like Seguridad Social, Cali & El Dandee, and Lila Downs.

Local tip: go early and return by bus (guagua). Parking in Teror on those days is an adventure you don't need.

Feria Arucas y el Mar — from September 9 to October 10

Arucas heads down to the sea and organizes a whole month of activities: water sports (bodyboarding, surfing, paddle surfing), workshops, storytelling, hiking, and a maritime fair that celebrates the island's relationship with the Atlantic. A perfect plan for families and anyone wanting to experience the sea in a different way.

Local tip: if you are going with children, check the schedule in advance. There are age-specific activities, and some fill up fast.

Culture in the capital: zarzuela, jazz, and a dinner-show

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria gets elegant in September. The Teatro Pérez Galdós hosts La Tabernera del Puerto (September 18 and 19), a zarzuela set in a venue that is already worth the visit on its own. The Auditorio Alfredo Kraus brings jazz with Melodías Forjadas — El Rincón del Jazz (September 26). And if you are looking for something different, the Nomad Dinner Show at Sala Scala (Maspalomas) combines gastronomy, music, and acrobatics with 30 international artists.

Local tip: have dinner before or after, but not during the show. The performance deserves your full attention.

Fiestas de San Vicente de Paúl (Lomo Apolinario, Las Palmas) — from September 18 to 27

Pilgrimage, crafts, street theater, murgas, and living tradition in one of those neighborhoods that preserves the true essence of the city.

October: festivals and open-air culture

Gran Canaria Big Bang Vintage Festival

(Parque San Telmo, Las Palmas) — from October 8 to 11

Fashion, music, and nostalgia in the heart of the city. The vintage vibe connects with that side of the island that looks to the past while remaining resolutely modern. Ideal for couples and anyone who appreciates the finer details.

Gran Canaria Walking Festival — from October 15 to 18

Four days of guided hiking through some of the island's most spectacular landscapes. There are routes for all levels. If you are visiting in October, this is the perfect excuse to get to know the island on foot.

Local tip: bring water, sunscreen, and footwear that already has some miles on it. The island can be deceptive.

XXXV Encuentro Veneguera (Mogán) — October 2 and 3

A cultural gathering in a unique natural setting, featuring music and tradition. Veneguera is one of those hidden corners that many visitors miss, and precisely for that reason, it is well worth the trip.

Jazz, Canarian music, and tributes

The Las Palmas Cultural Autumn brings Fred Hersch (October 11) and Los Gofiones with their Romántico concert (October 10). And the Mar Abierto Festival closes with This is Michael (October 17), a crowd-pleasing tribute act. For anyone looking for live music, October is a remarkably generous month.

A plan for every traveler!

Families

Feria Arucas y el Mar, Fiestas de San Vicente, easy hiking routes at the Walking Festival, and the Nomad Dinner Show if the kids can stay up for the performance.

Couples

Zarzuela at the Pérez Galdós, jazz at the Alfredo Kraus, the Big Bang Vintage Festival, and a dinner-show at Scala.

Adventurers

Walking Festival, Encuentro Veneguera, water sports in Arucas, and any hiking trail that crosses your path.

Digital nomads

The capital in October is a great place to work and soak up culture after office hours: jazz, theater, festivals, and tapas. The island boasts a growing community of remote workers who refuse to miss out on this.

Premium travelers

Zarzuela in a historic theater, jazz in an iconic auditorium, a dinner-show in Maspalomas, and the chance to combine it all with one of the properties we manage. Culture and relaxation, seamlessly blended.

One last thing

Gran Canaria is not just a sun-and-beach destination. It is an island that celebrates, sings, eats, and shares. In September and October, that side of the island shows itself without filters.

Come. And if you can, come for a good long while!!
